The Light the Night Walk is the major fundraising event for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society every year. This walk is done to provide hope and pay tribute to people battling cancer in addition to raising money for research to find a cure. The society focuses on cancers of the blood: specifically leukemia and lymphoma. During the Light the Night Walk participants carry illuminated balloons symbolizing the following: white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of someone who lost their battle to a blood related cancer. Seeing the large amount of lit balloons during the walk is quite a moving sight. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society has raised over $250M that has been committed to research in the United States and 10 other countries. This money is invested in outcome based science and technology. In fact, in the past 10 years, nearly 50% of new cancer drugs approved by the FDA were actually for treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve of these drugs are already approved for people beyond those that they were originally developed for.
The 2012 Los Angeles area Light the Night Walk is taking place in 3 different communities throughout the month of October. The largest walk is taking place in Hollywood at the Sunset Gower Studios on Saturday, October 6, 2012. There will also be walks in Santa Clarita at Bridgeport Park on October 13th and in Woodland Hills at the Warner Center Park on October 27th. The festivities for each event kicks off at 5pm. There is a remembrance ceremony at 6pm and the 2 mile walk starts at 7pm. Last year, the Los Angeles area walks raised over $1.3M. This year’s goal is to go over the $1.5M mark.
